The sigma complexes formed from the reaction of MeO- with 5-nitropyrimidine and its monomethoxy derivatives were examined spectroscopically. Structural ambiguities resulting from the lower symmetry of the nitropyrimidines compared with the trinitrobenzenes were resolved by selective deuteration.
