A solution of 4-chloro-5,6-dimethoxypyrimidine, 1 (5g, 28.64 mmol) in dry methanol (100 mL) was hydrogenated at 1 atm H2 gas pressure using Pd (10%) on carbon (1 g) as catalyst for 3 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was filtered through celite pad and concentrated to dryness to get (4 g, 99 %) of pure 4,5-dimethoxypyrimidine, 2, as a white solid.
