Azathioprine Electrochemical Adsorption onto the Reduced Graphene Oxide Sheets in Absence and in the Presence of Polyaniline

The azathioprine (AZA) electrochemical adsorption onto the screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) modified with the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets in the absence and in the presence of polyaniline-emeraldine salt (PANI-ES) is reported in this work. Using cyclic voltammetry(CV), in the case of the SPCE modified with the RGO sheets non-functionalized and functionalized with PANI-ES, respectively, an irreversible process at the electrode/electrolyte interface is highlighted to take place. In the case of the SPCE modified with the non-functionalized RGO sheets(SPCE-RGO), the oxidation-reduction processes induce an up-shift of the AZA Raman lines from 856 and 1011 cm(-1) to 863 and 1020 cm(-1), respectively. These variations indicate an AZA adsorption onto the surface of the SPCE modified with the RGO sheets that takes place throughtthe imidazole and pyrimidine cycles of mercaptopurine, when the generation of the pi-pi(*) bonds between the mercaptopurine structure and hexagonal carbon cycles of RGO occurs. The electrochemical functionalization of the RGO sheets with PANI-ES is proved bythe appearance of the Raman lines at 1165, 1332-1371, 1496 and 1585 and 1616 cm(-1). The oxidation-reduction processes induced at the interface of the SPCE modified with PANI-ES functionalized RGO sheets and the electrolyte consisting into a phosphate buffer (PB) and AZA lead to thegeneration of new positive charges onto the PANI macromolecular chain and the adsorption of the drug on the working electrode surface that takes place via the pi-pi(*) bonds established between the benzene/quinoide rings of PANI and the imidazole/ purine cyclesof AZA. These results indicate that the SPCE modified with the PANI-ES functionalized RGO sheets shows potential applications in the field of sensors for AZA detection.

Pronounced Solvent Effect on the Composition of Binary Self-Assembled Monolayers with Embedded Dipole Moments

The formation and properties of binary thiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), comprised of precursors featuring a short heteroaromatic backbone, consisting of a nonpolar phenyl ring and a polar pyrimidine group, embedded in two opposite orientations, were investigated in the context of work function engineering. The SAMs were prepared by coadsorption of both constituents dissolved in either tetrahydrofuran (THF) or ethanol, exhibiting a strong solvent effect. In the case of THF, the SAM composition nearly mimicked that of the primary solutions, with a slight preference of the 50%-50% relation, which was accompanied by the respective gradual variation of the work function, allowing its fine-tuning within the 4.0-4.9 eV range for Au(111). In the case of ethanol, a strongly preferential adsorption of one of the components was observed, limiting significantly the range of the work function variation. The effect of the solvent was tentatively explained by the different abilities of THF and ethanol to build hydrogen bonds to the SAM precursors, affecting their adsorption and self-assembly behavior. The composition and morphology of the binary SAMs were monitored by the electrostatic effects in photoemission, manifesting these effects as a useful experimental tool and a fingerprint parameter for the work function estimation.

Many factors influence CPD repair in epidermal keratinocytes, and a better understanding of those factors might lead to prevention strategies against skin cancer. Objectives To evaluate the impact of dermal components on epidermal CPD repair efficiency and to investigate potential factors responsible for the dermal-epidermal crosstalk modulating UVR-induced DNA damage repair in keratinocytes. Methods A model of self-assembled tissue-engineered skin containing human primary keratinocytes and fibroblasts was used in this study. Results We showed that CPD repair in keratinocytes is positively influenced by the presence of a dermis. We investigated the secretome and found that the cytokine CXCL5 is virtually absent from the culture medium of reconstructed skin, compared with media from fibroblasts and keratinocytes alone. By modulating CXCL5 levels in culture media of keratinocytes, we have shown that CXCL5 is an inhibitor of CPD repair. Conclusions This work outlines the impact of the secreted dermal components on epidermal UVR-induced DNA damage repair and sheds light on a novel role of CXCL5 in CPD repair.

Near infrared (NIR) emission from molecular materials is typically targeted by using more extended conjugated systems compared to visible-emitting materials. But efficiencies usually fall off due to the combined effects of increasing non-radiative and lower oscillator strengths as the energy of emissive excited states decreases. Efficient NIR-emitting organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are rare compared to the huge progress that has been made for visible-light devices. For organometallic emitters that contain a heavy metal ion to promote phosphorescence through the effect of enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the problem is typically exacerbated by decreased metal character in the S-n and T-1 excited states as the conjugation in a bound ligand increases. Here we show how the use of a dinuclear metal complex with an extended conjugated ligand allows such effects to be mitigated compared to analogous structures with just one metal centre. The complex Pt-2(bis-dthpym)(dpm)(2) (complex 5) is readily prepared by a double N<^>C cyclometallation of 4,6-bis(dithienyl)-pyrimidine (H(2)bis-dthpym), with the coordination sphere of each Pt centre being completed by O<^>O-coordinating dipivaloylmethane (dpm). This new complex displays intense NIR emission in solution, lambda(max) = 725 nm, with essentially no contamination by visible light <700 nm. The photoluminescence quantum yield of 0.17 in toluene at 300 K is vastly superior to that of the analogous mononuclear complex, where reduced SOC leads primarily to ligand-based fluorescence and only very weak phosphorescence. Computational results indicate that a key reason for the superior performance of the dinuclear system is a doubling of the number of higher-lying excited singlet states with which the T-1 state may couple, to promote the formally forbidden phosphorescence process. Complex 5 has been evaluated as an NIR emitter in solution-processed OLEDs. An external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 3.6% is attained using 5 doped into TBP:PBD at 5% w/w, with a turn-on voltage of 5.6 V (at 0.01 mW cm(-2)). The maximum radiosity of 2.7 mW cm(-2) for this device is particularly high compared to most reported NIR-emitting phosphorescent OLEDs. Pyridopyrimidinones are class of heterocyclic compounds which serves as important precursors in organic transformation and medicinal chemistry. In the current work three derivatives of pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine-3-carboxylates (1, 2 and 3 ) has been synthesized and characterized by NMR. The crystal structure of compound 1 (C12H12N2O3 center dot HCl) and 2 (2(C12H12N2O3)) were solved in monoclinic system with P2(1)/c space group and 3 (C11H9BrN2O3) shows concomitant polymorphism and solved in orthorhombic system with Pna2(1) and Pca2(1). The weak C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot N intermolecular interactions play significant role in crystal packing of 4-Oxo-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine-3-carboxylates. A S. epidermidis S2 isolate with low expressions of genes encoding pyruvate dehydrogenase (pdh), and phosphate acetyltransferase (pta) was found to be poorly electrogenic. The protective action of electrogenic S. epidermidis against UV-B-induced skin injuries was considerably suppressed when mouse skin was applied with LCC in combination with a poorly electrogenic S. epidermidis S2 isolate.
