Purification by flash column chromatography on silica gel (80 g, 5% to 50% EtOAc in heptane) gave methyl 5-cyanopyrimidine-2-carboxylate (0.83 g, 5.08 mmol, 48% yield) as a white solid. LC/MS (ESI+) m/z = 164.0 (M+H).
